Alpha/beta counters with automatic sample changers are a fixture in nearly any counting laboratory. These systems are best used when there is a very large number of samples to be counted, and the counting times are relatively short. In practical terms, an automatic system is appropriate if the sample load is about 10 per day or more, and the counting time per sample is about 30 to 60 minutes or less. These guidelines are flexible, and should be considered along with the turnaround time required, personnel available, etc.
Protean Instrument Corporation manufactures three systems with automatic sample changers. The WPC-9550 and WPC-9450 are operationally identical. The difference between them is the diameter of the detector, and the maximum diameter of the samples. The WPC-9550 uses a two inch active area gas flow detector with an ultra-thin window. The sample capacity is 50 (100 optional) samples, two inches or less in diameter. Sample planchets can be from 1/16 inch to 5/16 inch deep. The WPC-9550 uses Protean's innovative Quick-Stack sample rails, which allow off-line loading and bulk unloading without the use of additional sample carrier cassettes.
The WPC-9450 uses a five inch active area gas flow detector with an ultra-thin window. The capacity is 50 samples of five inch diameter or less. Sample planchet depth can range from 1/16 inch to 5/16 inch.
The IPC-9025 is the only windowless automatic system manufactured. The longevity and reliability of the IPC-9025 is proof of Protean's skill and dedication to the alpha/beta counting user. The IPC-9025 uses a unique hemispherical gas flow detector with a two inch active area. The system has a capacity of 50 samples of two inch diameter or less. Sample planchet depths range from 1/8 inch to 5/16 inch. The IPC-9025 is also unique in that it is fully capable as a thin window system as well. A standard Protean detector window can be installed easily by a user at any time to convert the system to windowed mode. Many of our customers have selected the IPC-9025 for the window flexibility it offers.
